Every cannabis brand that sells on terms asks the same question: how long do dispensaries take to pay, and is my book normal? The industry figures most people quote are a few years old. So we pulled our own. This report covers wholesale invoices from four cannabis brands, three in Massachusetts and one in Michigan, to the dispensaries they sell to. It is a first look, and we will update it every quarter as more brands join.

Most open invoices are past due

On 10/27/2026, the four brands had 438 open invoices out to 191 dispensaries. Most of them were already late.

70%

of open invoices were past due on 10/27/2026

80%

of dispensaries with an open invoice had at least one past due (152 of 191)

23 days

late for the median past-due invoice

By dollars, the picture is slightly worse: 73% of the open balance was past due. Past-due invoices run slightly larger than current ones. Most of the lateness is recent, which is good news, because recent is collectable. Here is how the past-due invoices broke down by age:

1 to 30 days late

62%

Share of past-due invoices on 10/27/2026.

31 to 60 days late

23%

Share of past-due invoices on 10/27/2026.

61 to 90 days late

5%

Share of past-due invoices on 10/27/2026.

More than 90 days late

11%

Share of past-due invoices on 10/27/2026.

One caution on that snapshot: brands often come to ShelfSpace because they already have a stack of past-due invoices, so these books lean toward slower-paying accounts. Read it as what a brand with a collections problem looks like, not as an average for every brand.

How long dispensaries take to pay

Between 09/14/2026 and 10/26/2026, the brands recorded payment on 445 invoices from 232 dispensaries. Median terms on those invoices were net 30.

33 days

median time from invoice date to payment

12 to 52

days for the middle half of payments

74+ days

for the slowest 1 in 10 payments

Measured against the due date instead of the invoice date, 20% of payments arrived more than 30 days late, and 8% arrived more than 60 days late. A net-30 invoice that gets paid on day 33 is close to on time. A meaningful slice of invoices drift well past that, and those are the ones that strain a brand's cash.

What happens once someone keeps asking

When each brand started with ShelfSpace, 207 of its invoices to 136 dispensaries were already past due. The median one was 17 days late, and 19% were more than 90 days late. From that day on, every invoice went out with a one-click pay link and a steady schedule of reminders in the brand's own name.

40%

of past-due dollars paid within 30 days of starting

53%

of past-due dollars paid to date

136

dispensaries in that past-due backlog

That matches what we hear from brands every week. Most dispensaries that pay late are not refusing to pay. They are short on cash that week, waiting on an answer about the invoice, or nobody asked. Make paying take one click and keep asking on a schedule, and a large share of the money comes in.

How this compares to industry figures

Outside estimates point the same way, though most are older. The Cannabiz Credit Association has reported that more than 56% of cannabis invoices nationwide are past due. Whitney Economics estimated $3.8 billion in delinquent payments across the industry, based on 2023 data. LeafLink reported that delinquent payments in the U.S. cannabis industry surpassed $4 billion in 2024. Our 70% figure is higher than the 56% national estimate, which fits a sample of brands that started with a past-due problem.

What brands can do

Methodology

Sample. Wholesale invoices from four cannabis brands (three in Massachusetts, one in Michigan) to the dispensaries they sell to, as managed in ShelfSpace and synced from each brand's QuickBooks Online. Four brands in two states is a small sample, and it is not a random one: brands often start with ShelfSpace because they have past-due invoices.

Open-book snapshot. All open invoices with a due date on 10/27/2026. An invoice is past due when its due date is before 10/27/2026.

Days to pay. Invoices with a payment recorded between 09/14/2026 and 10/26/2026. Days to pay runs from the invoice date to the date the payment was recorded in the brand's QuickBooks, which can trail the day the store actually paid by a few days.

Past-due backlog. Invoices already past due on the day each brand started with ShelfSpace, followed from that day forward.

Privacy. Demo and test data are excluded. Every figure is aggregate and de-identified. We publish no brand names, store names, dollar totals or single-brand breakouts.
